Shopgirl Teaches It!

Students work through the 25 examples to identify the human qualities attributed to the inanimate objects in the sentences.

I use this PowerPoint with my students as an introduction to literary devices. It has 15 slides along with graphics and examples.

This chart will work with any short story or novel. It includes the standard parts, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution, but it also has a place for students to include information about setting, mood, characters, type of conflict (internal/external) and a place for resolution and what happens to the characters at the end. I model this with my 8th grades and then have them complete the chart independently with certain short stories. It it a visual way to outline the story.

O'Henry's short story, "The Ransom of Red Chief is rich in humor and a number of literary devices. This 3-page essay format bunlde prepares students for writing a well-developed essay on the author's use of literary elements such as irony, figurative language, foreshadowing, exaggeration, and surprise ending. I've used this for several years and have received some well-written analysis of the short story.
 

I've gone through the short story selection and created a chart and worksheet (with a key) that outlines most of the examples of irony, exaggeration, simile, metaphor, and foreshadowing that O'Henry uses in this classic short story.

Students chart details of the main characters from this novel. Most information is found in chapter 1, but students complete the chart as they read the novel. Check out the companion smartboard files at my tpt store!

Mood in "The Tell-Tale Heart" is so evident thanks to Poe's writing technique. I credit this one selection for providing opportunities to teach so much in such a short time.

Definitely a student favorite and one I love to teach. This one page analysis of the poem comes with paraphrase placement and comparisons to be completed. A key is included for convenience.

I've used these for several year. The item includes a key and 3 pages of questions, quotation identification, and matching.

Unfortunately for me, our state adopted text no longer includes W.W. Jacob's short story, "The Monkey's Paw". It's such a great classic horror story that my 8th Grade students loved. Paired with Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart", it was definitely a student favorite. In any case, I hope to teach it again some time and have posted a Interactive Smartboard items that go along with this story.

I always have my students talk about what makes a good story - especially when we read horror stories. What makes a story suspenseful for them? The key elements that the author uses (a mysterious stranger in a dreary setting along with several ignored warnings) make this a perfect story to delve into the author's techniques for creating this classic story.
